Beautiful Madeira (a haven for hikers)
There are many great locations in the UK that offer great hiking opportunities – the many national parks spring to mind, the Lake District in particular are extremely popular for people wanting to go on a good ramble, the sheer number of walks make the lakes my favourite place to go for a walking holiday in England. However, to say the weather in England can let you down is a massive understatement, sometimes it’s nice to be out in the sunshine while you’re hiking. And that’s why I booked a holiday to Madeira in the Atlantic Ocean – the archipelago has plenty to offer for keen hikers and the weather is good all year round.

Madeira is an archipelago located off the Western coast of Morocco, about 200 miles north of the Canary Islands. I flew into the main island, and stayed in the North West side which was easily reached by hirecar. The island is a volcano which rose from the oceans millions of years ago, this leads to mountainous terrain and distinct climate differences between the north and south sides of the island. The North is much wetter as volcano causes clouds to form in the sky above, which are usually driven north by prevailing winds, much like the Canary islands. The south is therefore much drier; for hiking the wetter, greener north probably offers better trails.

A network of aqueducts was set up in the 16th century to transport water from the north to the south, these ‘levadas’ provide a network of natural walking paths through the mountains. As far as  mountain holidays come, Madeira offers some stunning walks through lush vegetation, and gorgeous sea views. There are guided tours available to help ensure you don’t get lost or wander around particularly precarious terrain – some of the crumbling levadas are built on sheer drop cliffs so it pays to be careful. However, the rugged, natural landscapes are all part of Madeira’s charm and a reason why Madeira holidays are so popular with hikers. I was certainly impressed and will returning soon to explore some new parts of the island.
